Owing to the alleged plan by governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State to dissolve the elected council in the 22 local government areas sworn in by outgone governor Rotimi Amaechi on May 25, about 2000 youths have stormed the complex of the Rivers State house of assembly with placards protesting the move, Vanguard reports.

The protesters were said to have barricaded the ever busy Moscow road leading to the state house of assembly in Port Harcourt. Blockades were mounted by the protesters on the road which forced vehicles to turn back.
One of the council chairmen who is leading the protest, Mr Sogbeye Eli said they were out to resist an attempt to dissolve elected councils in the state using the state house of Assembly. It would be recalled that governor Wike had on Monday dissolved the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) that conducted the council election on May 23 over allegations of abuse of office.

The protest has made it almost impossible for the lawmakers to convene at the assembly complex today. As at press time, some police officers were seen discussing with some of the council chairmen leading the protest.
