Lionel Messi has been ruled of action for 8 weeks after suffering tear in the internal collateral ligament of his left knee in his side's 2-1 victory over Las Palmas in on Saturday.
Statement released by the club also states that the 4-time Ballon d'Or winner may miss the first leg of this season's El classico against Real Madrid on November 21.
The injury, which saw the Argentine star substituted after 10 minutes of proceedings made it his earliest substitution since he began his professional career.
The 28-year old will miss Barcelona's games against Bayer Leverkusen, Sevilla, Rayo Valecano, Bate Borisov, (cup), Getafe, and Villarreal.
"Tests carried out on Leo Messi have confirmed that the player has suffered a tear in the internal collateral ligament of his left knee," the statement said. "The time out will be approximately between seven and eight weeks."
