It was a tale of mixed results for the top teams in the English Premier League with victory for Manchester City, draw for their city rivals Manchester United and a defeat for Arsenal.

The New Year's Day commenced in the EPL with Manchester United and Stoke City settling for a 1-1 draw at a windy stadium at the Britannia.

From close range, Ryan Shawcross volleyed Stoke in front through a knocked down header through a corner kick.

However United clawed their way back in the match and equalised through Radamel Falcao.

Stoke were unlucky not to have won the game, hitting the bar and having a penalty shout denied.

The result leaves Louis Van Gaal's team further off the pace on the log for the title, with Champions League qualification now the ultimate.

Meanwhile Manchester City survived a scare against Sunderland, largely due to Frank Lampard who saved their blushes with the winning goal.

City were two goals up scored from a thumping effort from Yaya Toure and a delightful clipped goal from Stevan Jovetic.

However Sunderland found their way back and equalised through former City players Jack Rodwell and Adam Johnson who headed in and scored a penalty respectively.

But Lampard came off the bench and headed in a third goal that confirmed the victory, a day that it was confirmed that he will be staying at City till the end of the season.

Meanhwhile Arsenal lost an opportunity to close in on a top four place, losing 2-0 at Southampton.

A brilliant goal from Saido Mane opened the scores for the Saints with Dusan Tadic adding the second goal.

Southampton with the win solidified their position in fourth in a bid to qualify for the Champions League next season.

Another team that didn't have a not so good New Year's Day was Liverpool, who drew 2-2 against Leicester City.

Liverpool got two controversial penalty kicks that Steven Gerrard converted in the first half, however found a way through David Nugent and Jefferry Schlupp.
