The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of Manitoba Hydro International, the Canadian firm contracted to manage the Transmission Company of Nigeria, and is poised to review the contract, Punch reports.

It also said that about 10,000 megawatts of electricity were lying dormant despite the country’s poor state of power supply.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC Chairman, Dr. Sam Amadi, who presented certificates to Fellows of the commission at a ceremony in Abuja on Saturday, “We have to overcome the challenges and that is why in the first place, we got Manitoba Hydro International to manage the network. The question, therefore, is what is the assessment of Manitoba’s performance?

“So, the result so far is that we are not satisfied with the transmission. But of course, you should know that time was lost during the contract awarding, debating on the position of the management, the board and all that.

“To be fair, they didn’t have a balanced condition to start; a board went down and the new board is on working together. Have they gone far as expected? I don’t know, until the review is completed as it will give us concrete information to base our assessment on.”

He noted that power transmission remained a bottleneck despite all efforts made to improve it.

“Perhaps, after the N213bn financial intervention to make sure the market improves, we will probably be able to ramp up capacity of transmission,” he added
