According to child mortality data provider by the United Nations’ Children’s Fund (UNICEF), Nigeria, India, Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Pakistan and China contributes half of the deaths of children under-five years of age globally. It was also indicated that the population of these countries grows significantly without improved water and sanitation.

The UN agency said that household without improved source of drinking water are more likely to experience diarrhea, thus children in the rural areas are at more risk of having diarrhea as compared to their children in urban areas.

With approximately 783 million people without portable drinking water, Nigeria accounts for 66 million of that population and 109 million people without improved sanitation. These figures place Nigeria on third and fourth on the list of countries without access to improved water sources and sanitation respectively.

The combined effort of the Government of Nigeria, UNICEF, WHO, JICA and numerous developmental partners has contributed to the reduction in Guinea worm disease transmission in Nigeria.
