Sports Wenger considering playing Mertesacker against Besiktas

Germany defender Per Mertesacker could be in contention to make an appearance for Arsenal in their Champions League playoffs against Besiktas.

Mertesacker was among the three players given extended breaks by manager Arsene Wenger,following their exploits with the German national at the 2014 World Cup tournament in Brazil,which they won.

With Arsenal's defence already stretched in their 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday,Mertesacker could be back early as cover in defence.

Also more players would be required to be fit,with Arsenal facing a tricky trip away to Everton this weekend at Goodison Park.

The 29-year old Mertsacker last week joined Phillip Lahm and Miroslav Klose to announce his retirement from international football.
