Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, has raised significant concerns regarding the Lagos-Calabar Super Highway Project, emphasizing the need for a critical reevaluation of its timing and prioritization in the context of Nigeria's current infrastructure challenges. In a statement released on his official platform, Obi highlighted the pressing issue of numerous uncompleted roads scattered across the country, many of which have become hazardous death traps and security risks for commuters.

Obi pointed out that while he acknowledges the potential benefits of the coastal superhighway infrastructure, including enhanced regional connectivity and economic growth, he stressed the importance of fiscal discipline and prioritization in allocating resources. He argued that given the state of the nation's economy and the staggering debt burden, it is essential to focus on completing and rehabilitating existing infrastructure before embarking on new projects that may take decades to complete.

The former Anambra State governor expressed concern that the proposed project if pursued without addressing the backlog of uncompleted roads, would only exacerbate the problem of abandoned projects and further strain Nigeria's financial resources. He highlighted the inadequacy of the current capital budget allocation for road construction and maintenance, emphasizing the need for a more strategic approach to infrastructure development.

Obi's remarks have ignited debates about the government's infrastructure priorities and the long-term implications of the Lagos-Calabar Super Highway Project. While some have commended his stance on fiscal responsibility and prudent resource management, others have raised questions about the potential benefits of the proposed project and its role in stimulating economic growth and development.
