Sports Algeria joins Nigeria in the last 16 of the World Cup

Algeria have made history qualifying for the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup tournament for the first time ever.

A 1-1 draw against the Russians gave Algeria the passage they needed to in order to go through to the next round of the tournament.

The Africans didn't start the best possible way they would have wanted after falling behind early on in the game.

Aleksandr Kokorin headed Russia in front after just six minutes and they were on the front foot and favourites to go through.

However Algeria did what they needed to do in order to go through netting the equalizer. Islam Slimani towered high to head home a Brahimi's free-kick in the second half that put them through.

Algeria defended with their lives and was able to repel the Russians from breaching them as they made history by making the last 16 for the first time.

They will now join Nigeria as the only African teams out of five to have gone through to the next round.

Meanwhile a ten-man Belgian team still had enough in their tanks to beat South Korea 1-0.

A Jan Vertoghen's goal helped Belgium to its third win in three games at the tournament.
