Hunting for a house in Lagos can sometimes be more difficult than getting a well in the desert. One of my friends soon learned this when he finally decided to settle down and secure an apartment somewhere comfortable in the state. To ease his search, he had secured the help of an agent and informally, made his other friends, including my humble self, unofficial agents as we were mandated to be on the lookout for an available space.
After months of rigorous search, solution was in sight as we, the unofficial agents, finally located a beautiful and affordable apartment. The axis of the apartment had everything anyone would desire; good road network, availability of BRT (for easy conveyance to and fro work), reliable power supply amongst others. And so, it was quite shocking when we suggested the place to our man and out of rage, he accused us all of trying to get him killed.
His reason? The apartment was located in Ikorodu and thus, it lacked one thing that is key to enjoying the other aforementioned benefits: security of life and property.
Ikorodu, from my 6 years’ experience of being a resident, is arguably the largest town in Lagos. And although its dense population gives rise to lots of issue, including security, things have taken a completely new and unfortunate dimension with the new ‘Badoo killings’ that is now a trending topic across the country, thanks to social media.
A new deadly group with the curious name ‘Badoo boys’ have left an unfortunate trail of blood, tears and sorrow in different parts of Ikorodu as they go about, murdering people in their sleep. The signature of this group is to completely wipe out families and this has been going on almost unchecked with everyone left to wonder who is next.
Contesting the motive of the group is neither civil nor necessary as the act remains inhumane and barbaric, and the fact that, despite all the group have done and the intel provided by local residents, they still prove elusive for the security operatives means that they have to up their ante to curb the scourge.
We must not wait until it gets featured on CNN or BBC before treating it with the urgency it deserves.
Traditional leaders, landlords and residents must speak up and be on the watch in order to aid the security operatives in solving a problem that is capable of ruining the reputation of the ancient town of Ikorodu as the home for all.
Social groups like Afenifere and OPC need to speak out and fathom out a way to help the stakeholders solve issues like this. By doing so, they would be disproving claims from some quarters that they have betrayed their founding objective of fighting for the Yoruba race, and are only concerned with issues bordering on politics and winning elections.
Failure to end this genocide as a people and a government would only embolden the group and perhaps, inspire several others as it would be an advert of our poor security system. Protection of lives and properties is a fundamental objective of every government; ‘Badoo boys’ are a threat to the existence of Ikorodu people, the time to act is NOW!
