Business Effect of Ebola Epidemic on the Economy: Affected Countries May Lose 1.5% GDP

As the Ebola virus continues to wreck havoc in West African countries and government bodies in support with the World Health Organization continues to battle the epidemic, experts have estimated that the outbreak could cause a country to lose 1.5% in its Gross Domestic Product, GPD.

African Development Bank (AfDB) President, Mr Donald Kaberuka, on Wednesday said the fight against Ebola epidemic may lead to a loss of about 1.5 per cent in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in affected countries.

He said that the outbreak of the virus was already affecting the economy and food security in some of the affected countries.

“ Our preliminary estimate shows that the Ebola epidemic may lead to a loss of about 1.5 per cent of GDP in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
