Sports Failure of the Superstars: Real Madrid beaten at home by city rivals Atletico Madrid

Real Madrid suffered yet another home defeat in the Madrid derby losing 1-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu to visiting Atletico Madrid.

Coming just two weeks after they lost their last game in the Spanish La Liga to Real Sociedad,it was a derby they needed to win in other to revive confidence in their bid to win the title.

But Real was found wanting once again despite having all their big guns on parade for the match.

Diego Simeone was not on the touchline, serving his suspension for hitting an assistant referee, but it did not in anyway affect the spirit of his players on the pitch.

The defending La Liga champions,Atletico took an early lead through Tiago Mendes who headed in from a corner to open the scores.

Cristiano Ronaldo, returning from an injury lay-off, netted a penalty in the 26th minute after he was fouled in the box by Siqueira.

It was all Real from then on as they battered Atletico looking for the winner.
Karim Benzema missed a handful of chances which later came back to haunt them.

On the other end,a neat finish by Arda Turan in the 76th minute sealed the victory for the visitors who cleanly took the opportunity they got.

The defeat was the second successive loss for Carlo Ancelotti's team, and they are gradually losing grips on the top.

With Barcelona securing a hard fought 2-0 victory away against Athletico Bilbao,Real's loss in the derby has made them lose further grounds.

Although it could be early days in the league, already Real are now six points behind Barcelona on the table.
