After the Russian military cargo plane was found in Nigeria - followed by a media wildfire - Russia has stated that the plane seized by the Russian authorities belongs to a French peacekeeping mission.

The Russian Embassy in Nigeria stated that "the plane that is being held [by Nigerian authorities] in the city of Kano is Russian, but its military cargo belongs to a French peacekeeping mission,"

The plane took off in Bangui, says The Moscow Times, and was headed to N'Djamena in Chad, before it had to make an emergency landing in Kano because the N'Djamena airport was closed.

Russia's diplomats in Abuja have said that Russian crew members were onboard the plane, but none of them was arrested.
