Microsoft is going to have to change the name of Skydrive, its cloud storage service, after it faced a legal battle with BSkyB.

It was a High Court Ruling in June that set this straight, where the court said the name Skydrive infringed on the trademark of BSkyB. According to the judge, the name “Skydrive” had caused confusion among members of the public.

At first, Microsoft wanted to appeal, but now the technology company has decided to change the company’s name globally, after a ‘transition period”.

BSkyB terminated its Store & Share cloud storage services in 2011, but it argued that the use of the word “sky” by Microsoft was a problem because BSkyB still had other digital services running, like its Sky Broadband and Sky Go Video streaming.

The result was that when customers had problems with Microsoft’s Skydrive, they called BSkyB’s customer helpline, thinking BSkyB was responsible for Skydrive.
