Sabri Lamouchi has resigned from his post as the head coach of the Ivory Coast national team after failing to qualify the African side for the knockout stages of the World Cup.

The Lamouchi-led team finished third in their group after losing 2-1 to Greece in the final round of the Group C encounter on Tuesday.

"I'm deeply disappointed for the players," said the 42-year-old.

Ivory Coast needed just a draw to ensure they took second place, meaning they would join Colombia in progressing to the last 16.

"The Ivory Coast is a great football nation and this was a cruel game, a cruel game," Lamouchi lamented.

"After so much hard work and so much sacrifice, all of us and everyone in the Ivory Coast is very sad."
The former Auxerre and Monaco midfielder who also had spells in Italy with Parma and Inter Milan, assumed duty as the manager of Ivory Coast in May 2012 in what was his first managerial role.

He was in charge when they reached the quarter-finals of the African Cup of Nations last year in South Africa, losing to Nigeria.
