Sports World Cup update: Lucky Brazil beat Chile to make the quarterfinals

ASG-024927.jpg Brazil defeated Chile 3-2 on penalties to qualify for the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time.

Gonzalo Jara missed the last decisive penalty kick for Chile after Neymar had netted his own kick for Brazil to send the home fans in raptures having secured qualification into the next round.

A competition they are under immense pressure to win,the Brazilians had to do it the hard way and make the last eight battling through 120 minutes to see off a resolute Chilean team.

David Luiz got his first goal for Brazil after the ball got a touch of Chile defender Gonzalo Jara before finding the net.

Barcelona striker Alexis Sanchez drew his team level, drilling in a low shot after Eduardo Vargas capitalised on a loose pass from Hulk to pick his man.

Both teams gave it a go,but it was Brazil who were the hungrier team looking for an opportunity to score a winner.

There was a big call from the referee Howard Webb who adjudged Hulk to have handled the ball before beating the goalkeeper.

The only other big moment came in extra time,in fact in the final minute when substitute Mauricio Pinilla almost won it for Chile after he rattled the bar.

Penalties would be needed afterwards to decide the contest and it was Brazil who converted three kicks to triump over Chile who only scored two out of the five kicks they took.
