The number of people who died on Saturday after a church frame collapsed on them in Akwa Ibom has risen to 200, according to the Punch.

The building of the Reigners’ Bible Church Int’l Inc, along Uyo Village Road collapsed on Saturday during service, with governor of the state Udom Emmanuel present. Although he escaped death by the whiskers, he was injured during the event, which caused pandemonium amongst worshipers.

According to reports, construction works on a section where the ordination held were rushed because of Saturday’s event. The church has an estimated 10,000-seater capacity. Two cranes belonging to construction giant, Julius Berger, were used to clear the debris.

It was learnt that the iron used in holding the roofing sheet was twice heavier than the block used for the building.

The Chief Medical Director of the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, Prof. Etete Peters, said one person died out of the 50 injured brought in for treatment.

About 200 persons were brought to the hospital dead, he said, adding that the hospital had never prepared for such an emergency.

Governor Udom has declared Sunday, Monday as days of mourning for the state.
