Nigeria's Environment Minister, Amina Mohammed, has called for the preservation of vultures in Nigeria.

According to her, the vulture population has devastatingly dropped from 97% to 70% in 3 generations. This calls for multisectoral, national, regional and international collaboration to end the trend, she said.

She listed events that affect vulture population to include activities of elephant or rhino poachers, which poison vultures and collision with electricity lines.

"Vultures are also used in traditional medicine," she said. "The feathers and head are used for ritual purposes and export to countries around the globe. Vultures are also a delicacy to some communities. They often serve as an alternative to chicken in some parts of Nigeria."

"Ecosystems are essential to human life, providing us with countless and invaluable services and opportunities. Our survival as humans depends on sustainable ecosystems, which provide us with food, water and clean air. Fundamentally, ecosystems are essential for survival, the basis for sustainable development and creating economic opportunity," she added.
