France is making moves to send 1,000 troops to the increasingly chaotic Central African Republic under an expected UN backed mission.

The announcement was made by Jean-Yves Le Drian, the French defence minister, a day after a UN official warned of the possibility of a civil war in CAR.

"It's in collapse and we cannot have a country fall apart like that. There is the violence, massacres
and humanitarian chaos that follow a collapse,'' Le Drian told a European radio station.

"It will be a short mission to allow calm and stability to
return.'' He added.

The additional troop will be joining the already existing 420 French troop already in the volatile region.
