Ledum Meiti, Chairman of the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) has stated that Nigeria lost about $10.9 billion to oil thieves between 2009 and 2011. The NEITI is an initiative aimed at increasing transparency in Nigeria's extractive industries (oil and gas, natural resources).
Mr Meiti stated that oil thieves in the Niger Delta have destroyed oil pipelines to steal crude and sell on the black market. According to Reuters, the scale of the theft suggests that the crime could not be achieved without the support of security officials.
