Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari has ordered the suspension of tenure policy in the Federal Civil Service with immediate effect.

As a result, top government officials such as Director Generals of agencies, Executive Secretaries at and others might be sacked, Daily Post reports. This is because the directive ends eight-year tenures for top officials at MDAs.

The directive was contained in a circular issued on Monday to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies. It was signed by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita.

The circular said it is with immediate effect and “all concerned are to comply accordingly.”

The former Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, Ahmed Al-Gazali, and the former Head of Civil Service, Stephen Osagiede Oronsaye, had in August 2009 initiated the tenure policy that provided a four-year term renewable once for permanent secretaries and eight-year term for directors.

“This is a landmark civil service reform by President Muhammadu Buhari because it will stabilize the system. The previous policy had led to the loss of good and resourceful hands in the civil service," someone familiar with the matter said according to The Nation.
